“It is up to us who are charged with leading our municipalities and regions to address inequality and raise awareness, both individually and collectively.”

Ibon Uribe, CEMR Spokesperson for Equality and Mayor of Galdakao (Spain)

CEMR had the tremendous honour of welcoming the following speakers in the session on the European Charter for Equality on 22nd April in Nicosia, Cyprus:

  • Anna Maria Kremmou, Councillor of Lapithos Municipality (Cyprus), Member of the Equality Committee of the Union of Cyprus Municipalities, Member of CEMR Policy Committee

  • Martina Schröck, Deputy Mayor Graz (Austria), CEMR Standing Committee on Equality Representative

  • Anders Knape, 2nd Vice President of SALAR, CEMR’s Executive President, City Council President in Karlstad (Sweden)
A few weeks ahead of the ten-year anniversary of the European Charter for Equality of Women in Men in Local Life (launched on 12th May 2006), participants in the session discussed the history of the Charter and its tools (Observatory and Indicators for monitoring) and the positive impact that it can have in promoting greater gender equality at the local and regional levels in Europe.

Mr. Anders Knape’s inspiring address is available here.
