The work of the Municipality of Oliveira de Azeméis in the area of Equality

 

 In the last few years, the municipality of Oliveira de Azeméis has been working to gradually integrate and adopt a socially responsible conduct in its strategy and operations, emphasising on the following initiatives:

 

  • Accession to the National Network for Corporate Social Responsibility, in October 2011, where, among others, the municipality of Oliveira de Azeméis accepted the principle No. 6 – Human Resource Management.
  • Signing Protocol with the Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality – 2012, to develop systematic work on gender equality and citizenship.
  • Appointment of a Local Councilor for Equality (in 2012) and development of the Municipal Action Plan for Equality.

 

Municipal Plan for Equality and the Social Responsibility of the Municipality of Oliveira de Azeméis

 

The Municipal Plan for Equality and the Social Responsibility of the Municipality of Oliveira de Azeméis has the following main objectives:

  • Setting objectives to mainstream gender equality in the municipality and in the Social Network organisations;
  • Promoting equal opportunities and innovation through the implementation of new practices for organisational change, with an impact on the overall structure and at individual level;
  • Modernising the culture of organisations, putting individuals at the center of its action;
  • Contributing to effective equality of treatment and opportunities for women and men, for the elimination of horizontal and vertical segregation and promoting reconciliation of personal, family and professional life.

The Municipal Plan for Equality includes a set of operational objectives and measures, based on good practices, that all concerned staff need to understand and internalise in the everyday activities.

In the preparations of the action plan, the municipality did a screening of the most important existing policy documents in the field of equality, both at national and international level among which the European Charter for Equality of Women and Men in Local Life was considered as an important document of reference.

The objectives and measures included in the Action plan will be implemented from 2014-2016 and are based on two components (internal and external actions). The main objective of the municipal actions on gender equality is to raise awareness on the importance of wellbeing and professional motivation among staff to improve productivity and quality of public services.

In the external dimension (the relationship between the Municipality and the community), the goal is to develop and implement activities that promotes true equality between men and women in various fields:

  6. Civil society organisations and businesses
